Smokey and the Bandit are on the road back. The popular film that starred Burt Reunolds and Jerry Reed as a pair of loveable bootleggers will be adapted into a television series by Brian Sides and David Gordon Green.
Green will executive produce as well as direct the pilot. Also producing is Danny McBride, who has teamed with Green on a handful of projects. UCP will also produce along with Erica Huggins and Seth McFarlane his for Fuzzy Door produtions. A word from Huggins can be found below. Green had the following to say about the project.
“Growing up in the south, Smokey and the Bandit was an iconic franchise for me. The legacy of these characters is a playground of swagger and sass that I’m excited to dig into.”

“When UCP mentioned Smokey and the Bandit we were immediately drawn to it. We knew we had to remain faithful to its original setting in the South, and find an authentic voice. David’s immediate interest and his unique perspective and love for the original made it possible. Smokey and the Bandit was a very cool and irreverent film at the time and we hope to achieve that same feeling in the show.”
I’ve seen Smokey and the Bandit several times, but not since I was a kid. I don’t remember much about the film except the basic plot of bottlegging and being pursued by the sheriff. Oh, and of course the song. I should probably take in a viewing sometime soon. Considering who is involved in the project with what Huggins had to say above, I will surely give the upcoming adaptation a chance when it’s released.
