SNL star Beck Bennett joins DCU’s Superman movie as Steve Lombard. The news was revealed by several trades, though quickly backed up by director James Gunn on Instagram.

Gunn simply said,

‘Welcome to the DCU, Steve Lombard.’

Lombard’s comic book history is as a reporter at the Daily Planet. Lombard works alongside Clark Kent and Lois Lane at the fictional paper. In the comics Lombard is brash and arrogant and often teases Clark Kent. Though he does also see Clark as a friend.

Of course it remains to be seen exactly what Lombard will be like in the DCU. Though, given Gunn has hired a comic actor, it’s probably fair to say he will provide some comic relief. Being a Brit, we really don’t get SNL so I have never seen Beckett perform. Meaning, I cannot form an opinion on this casting.

Given that filming for Superman is now over half way through, I’m guessing Lombard isn’t a major role. Though, just because the story only recently broke, does not mean he’s not been on set. None of the cast photos shared by James Gunn have featured Beckett though, so I assume he’s only come in as the shooting schedule for to those Daily Planet scenes.

Let’s just hope Lombard’s debut in the comics is not a part of his story in the DCU. Lombard, a former NFL star, get’s injured before Superbowl. He is given some new radiation treatment (it was always radiation back then) and develops some weird powers. Essentially a duplicate energy version of Lombard appears and goes on to star in the Superbowl. Then, it goes crazy and has to be stopped by Superman. Thankfully, I doubt that will be a part of James Gunn’s Superman movie. One can hope anyway.
