Han Solo and Lando Calrissian were the archetypal rogues in the original Star Wars trilogy, the classical pirates, both enamoured with the beautiful princess.
Now in Solo: A Star Wars Story we have a movie all about these rogues and the morally dubious world in which they live in. One would certainly imagine that the upcoming Star Wars anthology movie would delve more into the seedier, criminal underworld of the Galaxy far, far away.
Both Lawrence and Jon Kasdan , along with Lando actor Donald Glover have talked about playing in this slightly murkier world for a Star Wars Movie.
When asked about what drives Han’s moral complexity in this movie, Jon Kasdan told CBR
“Star Wars has been a very classic story of the dark and the light, good and evil. What was exciting to us about writing this was to really make a character movie where every character has ambiguity to them.”
Glover echoed these comments and seems very happy to be playing with the wilder side of the Star Wars universe.
“I love that there are rich and poor people in this movie. I just love it. You get to see why Han is complicated. Even by the end — maybe he did the wrong thing for the right reason, or the right thing for the wrong reason. That’s how everybody has to live. It’s a rough world out there.”
It will be interesting to see just how morally complex things can go with a movie still aimed squarely at a family audience. However, we fans who grew up with Star Wars have been clamouring for something a bit more mature, lets hope this ticks the boxes.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is released on the 25th of this month.
