Should have Obi-Wan Kenobi been a featured film released in theaters? That has been a debate amongst fans of the show. In my opinion, this story would’ve been better told if it was released all at one time on Disney+ or treated as a theatrical release with the possibility of multiple movies to tell Kenobi’s story. Stories started to appear that an Obi-Wan Kenobi film was in the works around the time of The Rise of Skywalker. Unfortunately, the following Star Wars film did not fare well financially and reset the plan for future Star Wars projects.

In a recent interview with The Direct’s Nathan Johnson, Obi-Wan Kenobi writer talked about how the project initially was supposed to be a trilogy on the big screen but because of the performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story plans were changed to make it a Disney+ series.
“It just was dying to be done. You know, unfortunately, it’s just, it was Solo that changed the direction of the system. I like Solo, personally, but it hadn’t made a lot of money. It is crazy in some ways to think about it how it [was directed by] of the best filmmakers working today. But, just because it didn’t hit a certain number, they just had to rethink. And, again, way above my paygrade, but it certainly crushed us. Devastated, absolutely devastated. But, that’s the business, you know, highs and lows. I’m glad it got made. I’m glad the show got made. I’m proud of my story that [got] told. I’m glad my characters are all through it. And I’m glad I got credit for it. I wish, I wish they’d been able to make my movies.”
I didn’t go see Solo: A Star Wars Story in theaters instead, I waited for it to be released digitally. I liked Solo: A Star Wars Story but understand why fans of the franchise didn’t like it. In this situation, I think Disney/Lucasfilm made the wrong decision for both characters. Kenobi should have been a full-length feature film with the possibility of a trilogy and Solo being a limited Disney+ series.
