Sonic The Hedgehog Director On Character Redesign: ‘You Gotta Respect The Fans’

I don’t think it’s controversial to say that the original design of Sonic in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film was received about as well as the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot was received by fans. Immediately, the Blue Blur’s design was maligned for two reasons. One, it looked nothing like the Sonic we knew and loved from the video games. Two, that s**t look creepy as all hell. With his human teeth, human-like proportions, and dead-eyed stare, it was not a look any of us would want to wake up next to.

We all know what happened next. Director Jeff Fowler and Paramount opted to push back the movie and redesign the character from the ground up. The result was a look that was much more in line with fan desires and expectations. But how did Fowler feel when he first heard the fan backlash?

LRM Online had the privilege of attending a recent press conference where the director was in attendance, and while there, the moderator asked what his reaction was.

“It was just, ‘Message receive.’ You gotta respect the fans,” Fowler said. “I mean, they’re the reason we had the opportunity to make this movie. They’ve loved Sonic for 30 years. You gotta listen to that. We were so excited about the story, had so much fun making the movie, and we really wanted the audience and core fans to be on board in a big way, and if that meant going back to the drawing board with Sonic, then we were happy to do it. And we could not be more excited about where we landed.”

While the jury is still out on whether or not the movie is good, but I think we can all agree that Sonic’s new look is leaps and bounds better than the original. It looks about as faithful to the character as the Pokémon were in Detective Pikachu, and that is very much a good thing.

Hopefully, the excitement Fowler and co. had for the story is something that we’ll all enjoy when the time to watch the movie comes…which is this weekend!

Sonic the Hedgehog hits theaters on February 14, 2020.
