Sony Boss Says They’ll Reboot The Sony Spider-Verse – Yet Call The Relationship With Marvel A Win-Win

Sony boss Tom Rothman says they plan to reboot Sony’s Spider-Verse (whether we want it or not), yet calls the Marvel relationship a win-win? I have some harsh words for Rothman there, but first let’s here what he had to say. Rothman recently appeared on The Town with Matt Belloni and he talked a little about all things Marvel and Sony related.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Reboot?

First off, lets get to the main headline as Rothman was asked if the (live-action) Spider-Verse dead? Rothman replied, “No”. Are you going to go back to those at some point? “Yes”, but it will be a fresh reboot, new people? “Yes”.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, or the SSMU for short was a disaster. To begin with it made money from ignorant MCU fans thinking this was Marvel, and even managed to get actors to appear in the films believing they were joining the MCU. That few years to run wild ended and the poor quality and lack of an actual Spider-Man eventually destroyed it. Poor movies that were flops even for their basement budgets.

So, why bring it back? Why not focus on the animated side which they do well? Build an animated Universe of films and then you can have Peter Parker, Miles Morales or anyone? Or, work with Marvel to make more Sony owned and paid for movies using some of these characters? That’s truly what the fans want, characters like Goblin/Osborn, Dock Ock, Kraven, Venom all appearing in the MCU proper.

To add further confusion, Rothman then talked about the relationship with Marvel as a “win-win” for both studios. Well, why not add to that relationship and agree a deal to produce a few extra movie with Marvel instead of separate entities? Rothman/Sony, no one wants the SSMU back, whether it’s rebooted or not. There’s no room for a third superhero Universe when we have the MCU and DCU active.

Marvel will be Okay

Rothman was also asked about Marvel’s recent faltering box office returns and he said,

“I’ll just tell you this. There are two people about whom I would say this, and maybe more if I think about it, but these are two that come to the top of my mind: never bet against Jim Cameron and never bet against Kevin Feige. He knows what he’s doing.”

“They’ve engaged course correction. Less television. I think it was the television and the elaborateness of that interconnection that made you have to be so inside, or else you felt excluded. And that was a mandate that Feige was given by a prior administration at Disney.”

“He’s a good corporate soldier. So he did what he was asked to do, but I think he knows very well that now, a degree less will be more, and it’ll be much more. Have no worries for Avengers: Doomsday, guys.”

China and the Statue of Liberty

Additionally, Rothman explained why Spider-Man: No Way Home was not given a release in China and why he doesn’t expect this to be the case for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

“They [China] said, ‘Just cut out the Statue of Liberty,’ which was the request. That was the request.”

“I really didn’t look forward to standing up in front of Congress, telling them why I cut the Statue of Liberty out at the request of the Chinese Communist Party. So, it’s been a really, really it’s been a great partnership, and I have to say it’s because they’ve been great partners.”

As for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Belloni pointed out that this one probably does not feature the Statue of Liberty.

“Actually, coincidentally, that’s true.”

So perhaps a China release will see Brand New Day beat No Way Home‘s box office take?

What do you think of Sony boss Tom Rothman’s comments about rebooting the Spider-Verse and their relationship with Marvel? Thoughts below as always.
