Sony Proves Some Ghosts Can’t Let Go In Trailer For The Grudge

After a fifteen-year hiatus Sony releases a new trailer for The Grudge proving some properties never die. Gone are Ju-on creator Takashi Shimizu and star Sarah Michelle Gellar. In on the remake are Nicolas Pesce, director of the 2016 horror film The Eyes of My Mother and Andrea Riseborough who appeared in Oblivion opposite Tom Cruise. Also starring is Star Trek’s John Cho. In addition, horror veteran Lin Shaye known for roles the original A Nightmare on Elm Street and Insidious. Horror director Sam Raimi serves the role as the film’s producer. While not a sequel, prequel, or remake, The Grudge is a sidequel. So, the events of the film take place elsewhere during the events of Sony’s original 2004 The Grudge film. Sony’s remake of The Grudge arrives in theaters January 3, 2020. I wonder if the movie will scare up enough box office dollars. The 2004 The Grudge earned $100 million on a budget of $10 million dollars. Hopefully, Sony can replicate the success of the first film and not suffer the fate of the 2006 sequel which returned a hauntingly low $39 million on an increased budget.

The Grudge comes out on January 3, 2020. Here’s the synopsis from Sony –

“A single mother and young detective, Muldoon (Riseborough), discovers that a suburban house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death. Now, she runs to save herself and her son from demonic spirits from the cursed house in her neighborhood.” I don’t know about you but this looks pretty creepy and if the words of director Nicolas Pesce are anything to go by we may be in store for a real horror treat. On a panel for The Grudge at NYCC Pesce said “The movie’s way more f*cked up,”. In a comparison between early 2000 J-Horror films and 2020’s Grudge, Pesce goes on to say –  “Not that the wave of J-Horror in the early 2000s wasn’t f*cked up — but this is really f*cked up.”
