Finally, Sony’s PS5 specs have been revealed! Alas, if you were expecting to actually see the console itself, you’ll be disappointed. Sony executive Mark Cerny took viewers on a deep dive into the PS5 architecture today. You can catch the full presentation below, however it is extremely technical.
The presentation was intended for GDC, but with that being cancelled, it became an online presentation instead. That means this was designed for games developers, not consumers, hence the very technically focussed presentation.
Fans tuning in were hoping to catch a glimpse of the final design for Sony’s PS5. Many of those fans were left disappointed as Sony chose once again to hold that design back. Sony fans are a little annoyed given Xbox’s willingness to reveal their aesthetics some time ago. But, let’s face it, the real news fans want is the skinny on which console is the more powerful. Lets get into that then, shall we?
The truth is we don’t yet know what Sony’s overclocking really means in terms of performance. The overclock aspect probably does get more technical than I can fully understand. However, as far as experts are saying, the Xbox Series X is the clear winner in terms of raw power. Here are the PS5 and XBox SeX listed specs in comparison with one another.
XBox Series X Specs
CPU:8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.8GHz (3.6GHz with SMT) 7nm.
GPU: 12 TFLOPs, 52 CUs at 1.825GHz,
Architecture: Custom RDNA 2.
Memory: 16GB GDDR6.
Storage: 1TB custom NVMe SSD.
Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-ray.
120 fps support.
Potential 8K resolutions.
Ray-tracing technology
PlayStation 5 Specs
CPU: 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency)
GPU: 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency)
Architecture: Custom RDNA 2.
Memory: 16GB GDDR6/256-bit
Storage: Custom 825GB SSD.
Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-ray.
Expandable Storage: MVMe SSD Slot
What does this mean?
Now, if you can understand all that and visualise the difference, then you are cleverer than I. There are obvious differences. Sony’s SSD is smaller, but apparently even quicker than Xbox. Xbox has more raw power, but Sony’s variable frequency might close the gap. Other than that you will find they are much the same and both a massive jump from this console generation. Even the Xbox One X is laughably mediocre compared to this next generation.

Whichever console you decide to buy, will be amazing. The choice depends on more than raw power for some. a consumer will consider aspects like, where your friends are, your back catalogue, and your preference on games. There is also an element of brand loyalty that comes into the emotional side of the decision on which console to buy. However, there will be gamers that will go where the power lies alone, most of those gamers have gone to PC, but not all. There will be gamers who went Sony this gen who will switch due to power for next gen. I doubt there will be as many as you may think though.
Ultimately, it’s going to be about games. I was probably sticking with XBox this time around anyway as that’s where my friends and clans are playing. What about you, Sony’s PS5 specs have been revealed, are you picking up a Sony PS5, or an XBox SeX? Leave your reasons below in the usual spot.
