Spawn Movie Will Have ‘No Joy’ Says Todd McFarlane

Man, you know what I hate? I hate happiness. Forget about movies becoming pieces of escapism. What I really want is to be dragged through the dirt and set on fire, but instead of putting my body through that torture (because let’s face it, you can only do that once), why not just live out my fantasy on the big screen?

I’m obviously kidding here, but I have to say, this piece of news is a bit odd to me. For many years, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has been hard at work putting together a feature film adaptation of his comic book character — one that would be a far cry from the horrific film we got in the 1990s. What we’re getting is a low budget horror movie… but that’s not all, as McFarlane revealed to Nerdist:

“There’s no joy. There’s gonna be no fun lines in it, and it’s just gonna be this dark, ugly two hours worth of movie, which is essentially what a lot of supernatural/horror movies are anyway. There’s not a lot of funny in them. And that seems to be a weird hurdle for a lot of people in this city to get over because they sort of go into a superhero/Avengers default all the time.”

Hm…Okay, then. Admittedly, it isn’t really a surprise this thing will be dark. McFarlane has been saying that for years. And given the source material, it’s not much of a stretch. But the way the dude is selling it really makes me kind of dread the movie. I’m not really supposed to dread the film, am I?

Now, granted, movies are allowed to be sad, depressing fare, but it’s admittedly not something mainstream audiences are all about these days. There’s a reason those Marvel movies sell like they do — because they make us enjoy life. When all said and done, it’s a good thing they’re going low budget with this one. It’s a risky film, and if it’s as depressing as it sounds, its audience will be fairly limited.

Now, don’t get me wrong. This movie could really be fantastic, but it really seems strange how much he’s driving home just how little joy we’re going to be getting out of it. But what do you think? Is this the right approach for Spawn, or would it not be the worst thing in the world to add in maybe one or two jokes? Let us know your thoughts down below!
