Spider-Man: Brand New Day is here and we have the current RT score, a review roundup and estimates the film could turn a profit just off opening weekend. Previews in some nations began today, and are everywhere by tomorrow. Of course the selected press have seen the film already and the review embargo lifted yesterday.
For now the critics score on RT is sitting at 91% which is very decent. As usual we will have some snippets from and links to selected reviews showing both sides of the coin. Most reviews enjoyed the film, but not all were full of praise. I’ll finish the piece of with some selected reviews.
First though, we’re also looking at box office estimates as per trades. Between what is being reported By Deadline and THR separately, it’s fair to say Brand New Day is a hit before it’s even been seen by fans.
Deadline says the movie’s budget was around $215m and given they estimate the film will generate more than $400m in its opening weekend globally, it’s going to be profitable by middle of next week. The rule in Hollywood is normally to double the budget for including the marketing budget. Though, studios have been smarter in recent years and marketing costs seem to be down a little for AAA movies. It means there’s a good chance Brand New Day makes its money back by Monday.
THR predict that the movie will earn up to $250m from the Chinese market alone, which is a market No Way Home did not have access to.
I guess that shows you the power of Spider-Man and let’s face it, the only other superhero that comes close is Batman on his own.

But fear not, that doesn’t mean the man in the red and blue webbed suit (don’t call it a leotard!) is stuck whining away on a psychoanalyst’s couch or poring over self-help manuals.’
‘Regardless of its shortcomings, *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* continues to wear its heart on its sleeve. Where it can get lost in its myriad of plotlines, it never loses sight of what makes Peter Parker and his webbed alter ego so endearing. It may not be perfect, but with exceptional visual design, stellar blockbuster action, true pathos, and a knockout leading turn from Tom Holland\*, Brand New Day\* genuinely honors the beloved wall-crawler, suggesting amazing things to come under Destin Daniel Cretton’s stewardship.’
‘As ever, Spider-Man can swing through the air across Manhattan without the overhead horizontal plane that his web would surely need to attach to, even in non-built-up areas (although he might be using power lines). And Spider-Man: Brand New Day, like all MCU movies, always gravitates towards apocalyptic but weirdly temporary destruction in the digitally confected big city. It’s an entertaining spectacle, but really without the novelty of movie-iterations like the more experimental Spider-Verse animations. A more radical reboot is needed.’
Someone didn’t think much of it then eh? Plus the review below says Tramell Tillman is a bit of a disappointment
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day sees Destin Daniel Cretton effectively refocus on the sturdiest pillars of the webslinger: struggling to find balance while swinging around New York City saving the day, and looking dang cool doing it. There’s more than a little déjà vu going on with a lot of Peter’s inner turmoil, and that does sometimes leaving the “brand new day” of the title feeling like Groundhog Day, but overall, it’s a refreshingly small-scale ride that gives Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and the rest of the cast (a wasted Tramell Tillman aside) at least a few moments each to shine.’
‘There is a lot packed into *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, and at over two hours and 20 minutes, it is on the longer side for a standalone Marvel movie. But somehow, it never feels needlessly overstuffed. There’s a tightrope walk here that Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers deftly pull off in their script, and Cretton translates flawlessly into a motion picture. Do I wish there was maybe a little less going on? Sure. Spider-Man doesn’t need this much happening around him to make a great movie (as we’ve seen for more than two decades). But if the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues marching forward, this should be the blueprint for how to set up a future without sacrificing your present.’
