Spider-Man: Far From Home – Jake Gyllenhaal Gives Film And Mysterio Details

The following article contains sizeable SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Far From Home, if you don’t want to know anything, you’d best skip this one.

So far, Marvel has kept anything to do with Jake Gyllenhaal’s appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home pretty close to their chest. We knew he was in the movie from a leaked set-photo before anything official had been announced by Marvel. Then we heard that Mysterio would be an ally of Spider-Man in the movie and the pair would be battling three ‘Elementals’, which sound an awful lot like Sandman, Hydro Man and Molten Man.

Now Collider has pulled together some quotes from Gyllenhaal at Brazil’s recent Comic-Con CCXP. Here is exactly what Gyllenhaal says about the movie and his character.

“It’s basically just about the kids going on a European vacation. We go to London, we go to Prague, we go everywhere. It’s just a really fun thing. There’s a lot of dynamics that go on. A lot of relationship stuff. A lot of cool funny stuff. A lot of fun stunt stuff. The main focus is for him not to be Spider-Man per se, but he gets dragged into it. But you know he reluctantly saves the world again with Mysterio. Mysterio’s a good guy in this, they’re both teaming up to kill the game, to defeat these Elemental monsters.”

It is worth noting that there were Elementals in the Marvel comics lore also, those being Hellfire (fire), Hydron (water), Magnum (earth), and Zephyr (air). But of course, they are also very similar to the more well-known Spidey villains I mentioned above. Gyllenhaal also went on to give some more plot details about these Elementals and how he becomes involved.

“Well there are these threats to the world, the Elemental creatures, and Mysterio is someone who knows about them and who wants to make sure that the world is safe from them, and Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he’s the only one who really understands them in a way. And he teams up with the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and unfortunately he has to make him become more than just a Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.”

Now, I know what you are thinking, because I’m thinking the same thing. I’d hazard a strong guess that it will turn out Mysterio is the one behind the Elementals all along and Peter will discover this after becoming friends with Mysterio. Ultimately Spider-Man will have to go up against a man he thought of as a friend, which definitely fits with the way Spider-Man villains normally work. Then again, who knows?……Nah, who am I kidding, this is about as much of a sure thing as Avengers: Endgame being the biggest box office movie of 2019.

What do you think of Gyllenhaal’s comments and do you agree with me that the plot is literally written on the wall for this one? Share any thoughts you have in the usual place below.
