When Zendaya was cast in the upcoming Marvel Studios/Sony reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming, which will center on the new Peter Parker/Spidey that was introduced in Captain America: Civil War, there was plenty of speculation about who she’d be playing. Well, of the options that floated around, none of them were the big bopper of female characters in the Spider-Man mythos: Mary Jane Watson.
Turns out, she should’ve been.
TheWrap is now exclusively reporting that Zendaya is playing Mary Jane Watson in the Jon Watts-directed Spidey flick.
The site claims to have two sources close to the situation, and they both claim Zendaya is the new MJ for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s been no official announcement from Sony or Marvel Studios as of yet, but with production for Spider-Man: Homecoming in full swing, we can expect this news to be addressed shortly.
Mary Jane was first mentioned in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #15, back in August of 1964. She would go on to become Peter’s most famous love interest. The Lois to his Clark, so to speak.
Traditionally, she’s been depicted as caucasian with red hair. This makes the Zendaya casting a major departure from the way she’s been depicted thus far.
Zendaya will be the third cinematic version of the character. The first was Kirsten Dunst, who played her throughout the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. The second was Shailene Woodley, who was going to be introduced as Mary Jane in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 before her scenes were cut from the film, making her more of a trivia answer these days.
