Marvel Comics is giving one of its original Spider-heroes a dramatic reinvention as Jessica Drew celebrates 50 years of crime-fighting.
Launching this November, Spider-Woman #1 will kick off a brand-new ongoing series from writer Dan Watters (Loki) and artist Andrea Broccardo (Spider-Man Noir), taking Jessica Drew back to her detective roots in what promises to be one of the darkest chapters in the character’s history.
The new series follows a major development set to unfold in Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity #5, where Jessica unexpectedly comes into possession of one of the Marvel Universe’s most terrifying supervillains. That shocking encounter serves as the catalyst for a new status quo that blends superhero action with noir mystery and horror.
Rather than focusing solely on traditional superhero adventures, the series will see Jessica working as a private investigator alongside veteran Daily Bugle reporter Ben Urich. Together, they’ll explore the hidden criminal underworld lurking beneath New York City, tackling mysteries that even Marvel’s biggest heroes are reluctant to investigate.
The darker direction will first be introduced this September in Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special #1, an oversized one-shot celebrating Jessica Drew’s legacy while laying the groundwork for her upcoming solo series.
In addition to Watters and Broccardo’s lead story, the anniversary issue reunites acclaimed writer Ann Nocenti with the character. Best known for her influential work on Daredevil, Nocenti teams with artist Stefano Raffaele for a new story honoring Spider-Woman’s five decades in the Marvel Universe.

According to Marvel, Jessica’s latest adventure will pit her against returning enemies, dangerous conspiracies, and an especially lethal version of Carnage, while an emerging darkness within Jessica herself threatens to alter both her life and her approach to heroism.
Watters said the series aims to embrace Spider-Woman’s investigative side while pushing her into stranger territory than ever before.
“I’m over the moon that Andrea and I are continuing the story of the mysterious Spider-Woman we start in the Anniversary special,” Watters said. “Investigating leads too dangerous for the Daily Bugle’s journalists, Jess will uncover some of the strangest crimes in New York City. And in a town like this? That’s saying a lot.”
Broccardo said the book’s noir influences were a major draw, allowing him to return to the darker atmosphere he previously explored on Spider-Man Noir.
“This series is a detective noir story, with Jessica tormented by something that changes her life, her superhero behavior and her approach to the cases as a detective,” Broccardo explained. “It also has horror and gore, which is unusual for Spider-Woman, but super stimulating for me.”
The artist also praised his collaboration with Watters, noting that the writer’s scripts make it easy to visualize each scene while leaving him eager to discover where Jessica’s story is headed.
The relaunch arrives at an important milestone for Spider-Woman. Since debuting in 1977, Jessica Drew has evolved from a character originally created to secure Marvel’s trademark on the Spider-Woman name into one of the publisher’s most enduring heroines. Over the decades, she has served as an Avenger, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, private investigator, and member of multiple superhero teams, developing a unique identity separate from the larger Spider-Man mythos.
Marvel appears intent on leaning into that individuality with this latest creative direction. By combining detective fiction, psychological horror, and supernatural threats, the publisher is positioning Spider-Woman as a title that stands apart from the rest of the Spider-family while giving Jessica one of her most personal stories to date.
Readers can catch the first chapter of this new direction in Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special #1 this September before the new ongoing Spider-Woman #1 swings into comic shops this November. Before either issue arrives, however, fans will want to keep an eye on Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity #5, where the events that transform Jessica Drew’s future are set to begin.
