Spotlight’s Director’s Next Project Gets Release Date And First Details

Tom McCarthy has been in the film and TV game for a long time. Starting out as an actor way back in the late-1980s, he eventually made his way to the directing chair, with his 2015 film Spotlight, which chronicled the uncovering of the Catholic church child molestation scandal, winning two Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

McCarthy has since gone on to executive produce the controversial 13 Reasons Why series on Netflix (as well as direct a couple of episodes), but we’ve been waiting to hear what his next project is. Now, we have our first word from Focus Features as to what that is.

According to the studio, his currently-untitled project will star Matt Damon and will have a limited release on November 6, 2020, with a wide release following on November 13 and November 20.

The film is written by Thomas Bidegain, Noé Debré, Tom McCarthy, and Marcus Hinchey.  Damon is joined by co-stars Academy Award® nominee Abigail Breslin and Camille Cottin.  Steve Golin, Tom McCarthy, Jonathan King, and Liza Chasin are producing.

Below is the official synopsis for McCarthy’s next film:

A thriller directed by Academy Award® winner Tom McCarthy and starring Matt Damon, the film follows an American oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter who is in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system, Bill makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter.
