As of this writing, a line has been drawn in the sand, and there are people standing on one side of the other. Spider-Man is apparently leaving the MCU, and from what I’ve been able to see online, the vast majority of fans are siding with Disney, if for no other reason than they make more consistently strong movies. Personally, I’ve found myself mostly siding with Sony, who I think was smart not to take an insulting 50/50 co-financing deal in order to keep Spidey in the MCU.
Plenty of people online have expressed their disappointment, with Jeremy Renner pleading to Sony to let Spidey back, and even Kevin Smith saying they should give Disney whatever they want to bring his character back. But now, Sony has a surprising supporter in Joan Celia Lee, Stan Lee’s daughter, as she revealed to TMZ.
“Marvel and Disney seeking total control of my father’s creations must be checked and balanced by others who, while still seeking to profit, have genuine respect for Stan Lee and his legacy. Whether it’s Sony or someone else’s, the continued evolution of Stan’s characters and his legacy deserves multiple points of view.”
Lee certainly has a point here. Had everything fallen under the Disney umbrella, we wouldn’t have gotten such films as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is near-perfect in our mind. However, Lee then goes on to more personally rake Disney over the coals.
“When my father died, no one from Marvel or Disney reached out to me. From day one, they have commoditized my father’s work and never shown him or his legacy any respect or decency.”
“In the end, no one could have treated my father worse than Marvel and Disney’s executives.”
Wow. Those are some strong words.
