Star Wars: Adam Driver On Kylo Ren’s Relationship With Han And Leia, Rey Romance

The poor Skywalker clan. No matter what, they can’t seem to escape the inevitable darkness that seems to permeate the family. Luke Skywalker and Leia may have been the savior of the Rebels, but just because they’re decorated heroes holds no guarantees for any offspring. This especially goes for any offspring of Leia, since it comes attached to another big personality, Han Solo.

You may recall, in The Force Awakens, that Kylo Ren told Rey that she would have been disappointed in Han Solo as a father, which seems to illustrate perfectly how Kylo Ren feels. In a recent piece from Vanity Fair, star Adam Driver discussed how Han and Leia’s devotion to their lifestyles left very little time for them to focus effectively on him as a child. Couple that with the mammoth expectations thrown your way as their son, and you have a recipe for a Dark Lord Jr.

“How do you form friendships out of that?” Driver told the outlet. “How do you understand the weight of that? And if there’s no one around you guiding you, or articulating things the right way … it can easily go awry.”

And go awry it did. While Kylo has been obsessive over “killing the past,” it seems clear that he may need to confront it, otherwise, he may succumb fully to the Dark Side.

But the last film did seem to show off a glimmer of hope with his relationship with Rey, which Driver gives an interesting term to.

“And then he had been forging this maybe-bond with Rey,” Driver said of his character’s time in The Last Jedi. “and it kind of ends with the question in the air: is he going to pursue that relationship, or when the door of her ship goes up, does that also close that camaraderie that they were maybe forming?”

And then, we know that the Knights of Ren are coming into the fold as an added complication, so Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will seemingly have Kylo Ren being pulled in three different directions. Will it ultimately break the young Force user? We will find out this December.
