Star Wars: Episode IX Director JJ Abrams Thinks They Might Have Something Special With This Movie

Star Wars: Episode 9 will be arriving in theaters this December, and hopefully we might get to see a teaser trailer and possibly even the subtitle of the movie by this weekend? However, as a hard-core Star Wars fan, I have to say my excitement levels for this movie are very low, as are my expectations. So far I haven’t been impressed with The Force Awakens and I downright despised The Last Jedi, so it’s understandable that I’m not expecting much from Star Wars: Episode 9. As a writer myself (if unsuccessful) I really struggle to find a way to end this trilogy in a satisfying manner. The Last Jedi just didn’t give me enough of a platform to build a finale on top of, and hey, maybe that’s my own lack of imagination for this.

However, it does feel like Episode 9 has a hell of a lot of work today to finish off this story. For a start, there are the fans like me who didn’t like The Last Jedi and let’s be honest this wasn’t a very small minority of people, there were many, many fans who didn’t like that movie and those fans make up a portion of the audience for Star Wars: Episode 9 as well.

According to director JJ Abrams, he thinks they may just have nailed it with Star Wars: Episode 9, speaking with Fast Company recently Abrams discussed the difficulties in wrapping everything up in this movie and he appears very confident that despite the difficulties, they have managed to pull it off.

“However, to answer your question—truly, finally—now that I’m back, the difference is I feel like we might’ve done it. Like, I actually feel like this crazy challenge that could have been a wildly uncomfortable contortion of ideas, and a kind of shoving-in of answers and Band-Aids and bridges and things that would have felt messy. Strangely, we were sort of relentless and almost unbearably disciplined about the story and forcing ourselves to question and answer some fundamental things that at the beginning, I absolutely had no clue how we would begin to address. I feel like we’ve gotten to a place—without jinxing anything or sounding more confident than I deserve to be—I feel like we’re in a place where we might have something incredibly special. So I feel relief being home, and I feel gratitude that I got to do it. And more than anything, I’m excited about what I think we might have.”

It’s interesting that he talks about how this could have been a case of shoving in answers, Band-Aids, and bridges, because that’s what I felt Episode 9 would have to be based on The Last Jedi. Is it possible Abrams looked at The Last Jedi and had some of the same criticisms that many fans did? Ok, perhaps that’s me reading his comments and applying my own bias against that movie and reading too much into things, maybe.

But clearly, Abrams felt it was quite the task before he agreed to come back and make the movie. Let’s hope his confidence in the product means he has pulled something special out of the hat. Though, even if he does, I still think I’ll view The Last Jedi as a wasted chapter of this story, I guess we will find out in December?
