The past week has seen rumor and counter-rumor surrounding the fate of the Obi-Wan centric Disney+ show, once again starring Ewan McGregor as Kenobi. Yesterday after the scramble for information, it was revealed that there was indeed a delay to the show. In fact, initial reports had said delayed indefinitely. However, it looks as though even that might be a little further from the actual truth than reported.
That report, depending on which source you took it from, said that due to script issues, the show had been delayed indefinitely, though both director Deborah Chow and McGregor remained on board. There were also reports that the show had been cut, or would be cut from six episodes to four, and that it was currently too similar to The Mandalorian.
However, yesterday after this story broke ComicBook.com caught up with Ewan McGregor at a Birds of Prey press event. Here is what the actor said about the delays. Apparently it has been all blown out of proportion, from a certain point of view.
“It just slipped to next year, that’s all. The scripts are really good. I think that so now that Episode IX came out and everyone at Lucasfilm’s got more time to look to spend on the writing, they felt like they wanted more time to write the episodes. I read about 80-90 percent of what they’ve written so far and it’s really, really good. And instead of shooting this August, they just want to start shooting in January, that’s all. It’s nothing more dramatic than that. It often happens in projects, they just wanted to push it to next year. It will have the same release date, I don’t think it will affect the release date. They’re still shooting towards having the [series] released when it was going to originally release.”
Then when asked if the show had been cut from six to four episodes McGregor replied,
“I haven’t heard that.”
This means it could certainly have happened, without Lucasfilm feeling the need to brief the actor at this point. However, McGregor sounds extremely confident that this is just a normal production delay and he offers his own praise for the scripts which were said to be not good enough in the initial report.
To be honest, if I look back at The Mandalorian, (with a few changes to the Cara Dune character’s introduction) I felt like episodes four and five could have been cut right out without much issue. In fact, at that point, I had my doubts about the show. It felt like really old-fashioned filler content to me at that point. For Obi-Wan, I don’t want a two-season story with a lot of filler. I would much rather have one season and one story told over as many hours as it takes to get it right.

If I think back on Disney’s tenure with Star Wars, I always get the feeling of them rushing everything to meet release dates. Instead of taking their time and getting the scripts right. If they are delaying Obi-Wan’s show to get the scripts better, then I am patient and would rather wait for the better product at the end. We can’t complain about delays and also moan about rushed scripts at the same time, right?
