Star Wars: Obi-Wan Series On Indefinite Hold, Series Being Pared Down To Four Episodes

What a confusing week it’s been. Last week, there was the rumor that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series was canceled by Lucasfilm, and that led to some source deep-dives from all across the interwebs. This included sources from us. One of mine told me that the crew at Pinewood had been let go and that it’s been canceled “indefinitely.” I ran with the story as a rumor, as I couldn’t corroborate it with a second source, and it looked as though both I and my source were dead wrong.

everyone else across the web batted this one down. Given that I couldn’t find a second source, I chalked it up to a potential misunderstanding between my source and whoever gave them the information. And then, yesterday, I heard from a second source that the production would potentially be delayed due to the fires in Australia. But, as far as they knew, not canceled. But still no corroboration that the Pinewood crew was let go.

This morning, I heard back from my initial source who had insisted that everyone at Pinewood was let go without a reason and that many had already started taking jobs at other Star Wars TV shows. However, given that it was still the same source, and I had yet to find another, I opted not to run with it.

Now, it looks like we have another outlet who was able to piece together more than I was. The folks over at Collider have now heard from two separate sources that, indeed, the show has been delayed indefinitely and that the crew at Pinewood has been sent home. But they also gave us a reason: the scripts.

Apparently, Kathleen Kennedy is not happy with the scripts for the show. The hope is that the scripts will get reworked and that everything can be brought together this summer, but we’ll see how possible that is. THR had more details. Apparently, two scripts had been written and both were jettisoned. One reported concern is that the show felt too similar to The Mandalorian, which is understandable. Additionally, the series was pared down from six episodes to four. The production is in search of a new writer at this point, and McGregor is still attached to star and Deborah Chow still attached to direct.

But will this all happen fast enough? From what we’re hearing, star Ewan McGregor’s schedule is pretty packed, so it may be a challenge to get this underway any time soon.

So there you have it. The picture as best as I can see it thus far, based on my own sources and Collider’s and THR’s additional reporting.

It’s also worth mentioning that YouTuber Grace Randolph stated the above on Monday via Twitter, a day or two after we did…except with a great deal more confidence and a tad more information.

What do you make of all this? Are you sad to see it delayed or are you happy they’re taking their time? let us know your thoughts down below!
