Star Wars: J.J. Abrams Says It Was Far Harder To End This Sequel Trilogy Than To Start It

Prior to directing Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, I think it would be fair to say that J.J. Abrams had a reputation for starting stories and never quite finishing them. When you look at Abrams’ CV, he was always great at creating interesting mysteries, but in my opinion, they very rarely ever had satisfying conclusions, or, Abrams had bugged out before the ending arrived. The Star Wars sequel trilogy was no different initially, Abrams was supposed to set up his mystery box and it would be others jobs to carry it forward and end it.

Of course, things changed when Colin Trevorrow left directing duties on Star Wars: Episode 9 and Lucasfilm turned once again to Abrams to craft what is now known as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. In a recent interview with the cast and crew of the movie, Abrams was asked specifically by ET Online whether it was harder to begin this story or end it, here is what he said.

“Not starting it. Wrapping it up for sure, because there’s nine movies, and the responsibility is much greater. Starting something isn’t necessarily easy, but its’ far easier because the possibilities of what happens are everywhere.”

Oscar Isaac then joked it was like starting a fire versus putting one out, and Abrams agreed with the analogy. Abrams had previously talked about the difficulty in ending this movie when he spoke with EW back in October saying,

“Endings are the thing that scare me the most, this is about bringing this thing to a close in a way that is emotional and meaningful and also satisfying in terms of actually answering [as many] questions as possible. So if years from now, someone’s watching these movies, all nine of them, they’re watching a story that is as cohesive as possible.”

That of course, is the real challenge for this movie, to not only wrap up the sequel trilogy, but wrap up all nine Skywalker Saga movies. We will all be chiming in with how well we felt he managed this in around two weeks’ time.
