Yesterday, we reported that Lucasfilm was officially (finally) working on a spinoff for the fan-favorite Star Wars character Obi-Wan Kenobi. This was a character who’s been rumored for a spinoff since we realized Lucasfilm would be making spinoffs. While this was a given that fans have been waiting on an announcement for for some time, this wasn’t the only talk to bleed through.
Variety also reported that Obi-Wan wasn’t the only film in development. In addition to the Boba Fett film — which was the film that Josh Trank was set to work on — they were also working on a Jabba the Hutt movie. That’s right, everyone’s favorite gangster slug could very well be getting his own movie in the distant future.
Just how in the hell would they actually plan on telling a Jabba the Hutt story? We can only guess right now, though perhaps it can be a film that has someone else at its center that has either Jabba as a main player or as the villain.
This isn’t the only time Mr. Hutt’s been rumored for some kind of appearance in the upcoming films. Earlier this year, Jabba was rumored to be showing up in the upcoming untitled Han Solo movie, though in what capacity remains to be seen.
So is this a good idea? We think not. Personally, I’d much rather see an Aunt May Spider-Man spinofff than this, and Lucasfilm’s seeming desire to go with Jabba is further proof of their fear to branch out into unknown territory, which is disheartening, given how much latitude there is with a brand like Star Wars. Maybe next time.
