Ever since Disney purchased LucasFilm in 2012, people have been dying for more games based on Star Wars. Why have we been waiting on more? BECAUSE THEY HAVEN’T DONE CRAP WITH THE PROPERTY! Since the purchase, we have had a handful or mobile games and two Battlefront games. EA, the company given the license to make Star Wars games, has been riddled with controversy since day one. Between canceling games, loot box issues, and microtransactions, the company has left a bad taste in the sarlacc’s mouth. However, there is some hope…
The trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order hit at this year’s Star Wars Celebration and has the internet abuzz. The trailer shows us the game’s hero Cal Kestis, who is voiced by Cameron Monaghan (Shameless, Gotham), explaining that the galaxy is changing after the fall of the Jedi and rise of the Empire. We see him in his day to day life as a salvage worker until an accident happens and he appears to use the Force to save a fellow worker. What follows is a bunch of clips of him running from and fighting with a new type of Stormtrooper, called a Purge Trooper, and the Inquisitor called Second Sister. Nothing really is given away that we didn’t already know, but it does look cool.
RELATED: Is LucasArts Making Games Again?
The drawback is how much this looks and feels like a reboot of The Force Unleashed. While it is too early to judge how well the game will be received, I can say that fans are likely to feel cheated by EA again. Both Battlefront games are essentially just updated versions of the original Battlefront games and if this really does feel like The Force Unleashed then fans are left with nothing new or innovative. One thing is for certain, we need more games from this universe. The 90s and 2000s gave us dozens of Star Wars games in every genre there is. Flight simulators, real-time strategy, first-person shooters, role-playing games, and action platformers all got the treatment of the galaxy far, far away. With LucasFilm Games being spun up again, maybe we’ll start getting more, and hopefully better, games.
All we can do is trust in the Force…
