Star Wars: John Boyega ‘Iffy’ On The Last Jedi, Concerned About Trio Dynamic Between Sequel Trilogy Leads

While the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy has been both a critical and box office success — with both movies thus far getting over 90% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, its effect on the fandom hasn’t been so positive. At this point, the fandom seems to be split in two, especially when it comes to The Last Jedi, which is still a topic of endless discussion among the LRM Online staff.

Actor John Boyega has been pretty candid in the past on Twitter regarding his problems with Finn’s character, he’s generally been positive about the whole experience. However, speaking with Hype Beast, he got a bit more specific on some of his issues with the last movie.

“The Force Awakens I think was the beginning of something quite solid,” he told the outlet. “The Last Jedi if I’m being honest I’d say that was feeling a bit iffy for me. I didn’t necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that and that’s something that spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about and we had conversations about it. And it was hard for all of us, because we were separated.”

I’m sure that some of those problems had to do with Luke Skywalker’s character — something I’ve never agreed with Hamill on, as having him be the pantheon of goodness would have never made sense for me all these decades later. Anyway, in addition to that, Boyega also mentioned another concern regarding how well we knew the original trio in Star Wars in the Original Trilogy compared to the trio in this current trilogy.

Boyega said, “I guess the original Star Wars films there was much more of a trio feel where it was essentially about Luke’s journey, but Han and Leia there was a strong dynamic, which I think, I don’t know how quickly we’re going to be able to establish that longterm dynamic with [Episode] Nine. But if it’s exploring that dynamic, then that would be cool. I do feel even after three films still, we don’t know them as much as we got to know Han, Luke, Leia. And maybe [another film is] a great opportunity to get to know them a little bit more.”

While I can see where he’s coming from there, I’m not sure I entirely agree. The Star Wars Original Trilogy has the benefit of decades of viewings, analysis, and fandom. We know those movies as well as we can know anything. Given that they also came out in an era where we weren’t inundated with content, it allowed us to grow up watching an rewatching them, taking in every little detail.

Perhaps in another two decades, audiences will feel the same about the new characters as we do about the old ones. Perhaps. Then again, that’s just a Sequel Trilogy’s fan’s opinion.
