Star Wars: Rian Johnson Inspired J.J. Abrams To Make Different Choices

Okay, so this is something I’m sure will rub a lot of fans the wrong way. To say that Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi was a divisive movie would be a huge understatement. Even over a year later, every conversation we here at LRM Online have in our Slack channel inevitably leads back to The Last Jedi. Battlefields are drawn and the argument goes round and round.

As we all know, later this year, the nine-part Skywalker Saga will be coming to an end with J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Abrams was a kind of safe bet for Lucasfilm, given his proven track record, but ironically enough, it sounds like the more bold nature of Rian Johnson has rubbed off on him, as he revealed to Vanity Fair:

“Having seen what Rian did made me approach this from a place of instinct and gut. I was making choices I knew I would not have made on VII, some story-wise, but more in terms of directing. I found myself feeling less like I’m going to try and do something that feels like it’s [only] true to the specifics of this franchise or the story.”

Okay, so first things first, it’s worth pointing out that this seems to mostly include his directing. That being said, I appreciate the implications — that Abrams is looking to make choices that feel more instinctual, rather than simply trying to appeal to typical franchise tropes.

I know a lot of The Last Jedi haters may not appreciate that, but many of them also didn’t like how safe The Force Awakens was. Perhaps Abrams will be splitting the difference between the safety of his first movie and Johnson’s more brazen installment.
