Whenever dealing with a series of films spanning multiple directors, one can’t help but wonder if there was any bleeding over of ideas or plot points. After all, in a trilogy, everything that happens in the first two movies should presumably build up to the finale in a way that makes the ending surprisingly, yet somehow inevitable. With that in mind, MTV News asked Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson about his involvement with J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode IX.
“I’ve had a couple of conversations with [Abrams],” Johnson told the outlet, “but I’ve actually really enjoyed sitting back waiting to get my popcorn opening day and see how the thing turns out. I cannot wait.” When asked further about whether or not he’d be disappointed if Abrams went so far as to retcon The Last Jedi‘s claim that Rey is from no notable lineage, Johnson shook his head. “Like I said, I want to let go of all my expectations, I want to sit back, I want to be entertained. I want to be surprised. I want to be thrilled. I want him to do stuff that I wasn’t expecting him to do and just go along for the ride. For me, that’s why I go to the movies.”

I can certainly understand Johnson’s perspective on this. After all, part of what made Star Wars: The Last Jedi so great for me is that I wasn’t able to predict where it was going. I didn’t foresee the bond between Rey and Kylo Ren, I didn’t see Snoke’s death coming, and I genuinely didn’t know how the story would resolve.
That being said, I’m sure this comment will irk plenty of fans who don’t hold the same opinion as me. One major complaint among those of us here at LRM Online who didn’t like the movie is that it didn’t feel like there was any plant at Lucasfilm for the trilogy as a whole, which could lead to each film undoing the last. That wouldn’t exactly make for an enticing and rewarding three-film experience.
