Initially, I was not planning to cover this story for the reasons I will explain below. However, this rumor has started to blow up a little on social media and various other online hang out’s such as Reddit. So I figured we’d better cover this.
A while ago we first heard from Variety that Matt Smith was cast in Star Wars: Episode 9 and to be fair, it is rare that Variety with their connections would get something like this completely wrong, but I guess it is possible? Anyway, yesterday the LA Times reported that Matt Smith may not be in Star Wars: Episode 9 because he had denied this to reporter Emily Zemler. Check it out.
One takeaway: Matt Smith is not in the next #StarWars movie, despite reports to the contrary. He told me, “As far as I can tell, I’m definitely not." (Although maybe we'll be surprised by his secret keeping in December.)

Now this surprised many, but to be fair this would not be the first time that someone has denied working on a Star Wars project. Remember when the Pedro Pascal rumors began for The Mandalorian and the actors representatives denied any involvement and flat out said the report was wrong? Well, now we know officially that Pascal does indeed play the lead character in The Mandalorian.

If that’s not enough, we also have quotes from Richard E. Grant which appear to confirm Matt Smith’s involvement in the movie as a kind user reposted in response to LA Times reporter Emily Zemler’s original post

Now, I was aware of this particular quote before I saw this reply. However, sharing that with you is now much easier thanks to Riri. We also have to take into account that whilst scoop site MSW haven’t heard much of anything about Matt Smith’s character, they also appear to be very confident he is in the movie. If we add up all of this, I do think this feels like Smith is just playing the denial game right now, perhaps because his character has a very secretive role. That’s kind of what we are all assuming right now, but who knows how long it will take to get confirmation of all this. I am sure it won’t be a case of coming out of Star Wars: Episode 9 and finally realising Zemler was right and Smith wasn’t in the movie.
So there you have it folks, you are free to make your own judgement based on the evidence I have provided, but it could be some time before we know for certain whether this rumor is true or a false flag.
