Here’s my Skeleton Crew Episode 4 review and I’ll start by saying this was my least favourite episode of those released to date. It’s not awful, or shark jumping, and it doesn’t destroy the series in any way. It’s just a bit, meh for me. Now, as always I’m staying SPOILER FREE so I won’t get too much into specifics of the plot of Episode 4. I will talk about the previous episodes as if you’ve seen them though.
So, we ended Episode 3, which was my favourite so far, with some coordinates to head to. Now, as you’d guess, the crew don’t get home half way through the series. Therefore, it is clear that this is one of the other ‘shield worlds’. That’s as far as I will go on plot. My issues ultimately though are mostly concerned with that plot. I simply wasn’t that impressed by the writing. They take a trope seen in countless sci-fi series and adapt it to their own needs. Yet, the surface level of detail we get on the situation just isn’t enough to get me to care about it in this setting.
This is the first week where I felt that short runtime curse that plagues most Disney series. Everything just feels rushed and abrupt, with no time to breathe. The only character that gets a little development time this week is Neel. Maybe a little for SM-33, who I still love. Jod (Jude Law) had a couple of nice lines/moments, but most of this story happens off-screen, which I think was a poor choice. I hate using the term filler episode, but that’s almost what this was. There are some elements which advance the plot along, and deepened the central mystery though. Therefore, I won’t say it’s complete filler. Episode 4 is however, just nowhere near as well written a script as the previous three.

I’m still engaged with the series, so far. There were one or two moments I liked, but no laugh out loud moments this week. The best I got was a wry smile at one line from Jude Law which he delivered well. However, it’s honestly a weird episode and just didn’t quite feel the same quality as what came before.
Here’s hoping things take an upturn again in Episode 5. I think I have an idea of where this series is going, though I’ll hold my tongue for now. It’s really going to depend on the quality of the scripts for each episode and for me, this one could have been something else, or even turned on it’s head. I already said we don’t get much of Jod this week, I’d have reversed that scenario, or showed both sides of the coin as it were. That would mean an extra 10 minutes runtime though.
GRADE: C+
Enough for me to half enjoy, not enough bad to make me not want to come back next week. Overall for me, the weakest episode to date. Though it did have some interesting camera work thanks to directors The Daniels.
