Star Wars: Starfighter Director Shawn Levy Talks Outsiders Influence And Current State Of The Galaxy

Star Wars: Starfighter director Shawn Levy talks about The Outsiders being an influence, plus the current state of the Star Wars Galaxy. Levy has begun promoting Starfighter after the first trailer was shown to attendees at D23 this past weekend. For a description of that teaser, which I’ve seen, check the related section below. Following the teaser, Levy had a coupe interviews, the first we’ll cover was with Fandango below.

In this interview Levy talks about how both the book and film of The Outsiders was a key influence on Starfighter. That this is the wrong side of the Galaxy and these are poor ‘low’ people in the hierarchy. Levy also mentioned car culture being an influence on the film, in the way car culture was an inspiration to George Lucas with Star Wars. The director was excited to get to create a “whole fleet” of new Starships for the film.

There’s a bit more in the video, including Levy’s praise for star Ryan Gosling and young newcomer Flynn Gray.

Second up we have a Tik Tok interview Levy did with GMA. Click the link if you have the app and watch it for yourself. For those old ones like me who don’t have it, here’s the transcript of the important part mentioned in the headline.

As we know, Starfighter takes place five years post-The Rise of Skywalker, so what kind of state is the Galaxy in?

“This a moment in the galaxy where there is not sort of governing enforcer or order. Right? So Everyone is trying to survive, everyone is trying to do what they have to get by.”

A vacuum left by the destruction of both the New Republic and the First Order is I guess a good place for a new story to begin. Ultimately that was Levy’s brief as he says in that first interview above. Take Star Wars into the future with new characters and new stories.

Let us know what you think of Levy’s comments about next May’s Star Wars: Starfighter? I do worry when this one is up against X-Men from sister studio Marvel, but that’s Disney’s call  I guess. There is 23 days between the releases at least.
