Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Finn Wants Out Of The Resistance

It’s easy to look at heroes and assume they want to join in the fight against the big baddies. This is especially true in the Star Wars films, where there is rarely morally gray areas. That being said, Finn is a character who is rarely driven by the right thing. While he did turn over a new leaf by leaving the First Order, it was very clear early on that what he really wanted was to get the hell out of Dodge.

By the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Finn’s attempts at heroicism were met by a lightsaber through the spinal cord, leaving him unconscious and recuperating. He also saw one legend in the form of Han Solo meet his untimely demise at the hand of the First Order’s Kylo Ren. It’s no surprise, then, that at the beginning of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Finn is ready to vacate the Resistance, as actor John Boyega revealed to EW.

“It got really real for him. And he just wants to get away and not be involved. His intention in the first place was to go to the Outer Rim. He was always brought back [in The Force Awakens,], but this is his chance to get away and perhaps find Rey and go off together. He’s trying to do that at first.”

In an interesting twist of fate, however, Finn is now revered as a hero by a whole lot of people. Now, all of a sudden, he finds himself something of a role model to lots of Joe Schmoes around the galaxy. This is especially true for newcomer Rose Tico, a Resistance mechanic played by Kelly Marie Tran. While good at what she does, is a “nobody” in the Star Wars world. To people like her, Finn is a hero. Boyega elaborated on just how the galaxy viewed him.

“Everyone in the space, throughout the galaxy, would have heard about the young Jedi who discovered her powers and defeated Kylo Ren and the young former Stormtrooper who helped save the day. He’s a hero to people like Rose, who fight for the Resistance because their homes have been destroyed by the First Order. [Finn] appreciates [Rose’s] adoration for a second, but when he meets her, Finn is trying to escape the whole war. He’s trying to leave. And she comes in and basically gives him a depiction of himself that wasn’t necessarily true.”

Too bad. Finn leaves anyway, letting the galaxy fall victim to the First Order.

Okay, so that doesn’t happen, obviously. This is Star Wars. Instead, it sounds like Rose’s admiration helps him rise above his fear to become a better person and to really make a difference.

“It’s now an opportunity for him to be the best he can be. He has to make a decision, and Rose is there to help him make that choice.”

It certainly sounds like an interesting journey for Finn to go on. As someone who’s initially been out for himself (and not in a cool, “I don’t care what people think” way like Han Solo), it’s great to see that he’s still battling with his desire for self-preservation.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
