Since we found out that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker had a story credit leftover from Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, fans have wondered just how much of that original script was left in the final movie we saw. We know that Trevorrow had came up with the idea of the red troopers, though they were not called Sith Troopers yet, and we know he never even considered having Palpatine back.
So there must have been more for Trevorrow and Connolly to get a writing credit huh? According to Chris Terrio who co-wrote the movie with director J.J. Abrams, it was all coincidence as they started from scratch. Terrio recently spoke with The Wrap about the current box office king of the holidays and here is what he said with regards Trevorrow’s version.
“We are both a little superstitious about starting with material that might lead us in a direction that’s different than the one we might’ve gone in naturally. So we didn’t begin with the previous script, there may have been certain elements that we used that had been in the original script and we weren’t aware of it. The Guild makes the determination about those things. We didn’t have a bad relationship to Colin’s material. We just didn’t start with it. It’s not a juicy story of intrigue or anything.”
It is kinda hard to believe that with the story credit they got, Abrams and Terrio really didn’t pick up some elements they liked of Trevorrow’s version. The red troopers alone must have been an element that someone had read and decided they liked, surely?
It may be that we will never truly find out what Trevorrow’s version would have been like, unless the lid is lifted as time goes on. All we do know is that Trevorrow is keeping tight-lipped other than him stating he had not even considered bringing back Papa Palps in his version. When he spoke with Empire a while ago, here is what the director said.
“Bringing back the Emperor was an idea JJ brought to the table when he came on board, it’s honestly something I never considered. I commend him for it. This was a tough story to unlock, and he found the key.”
There have been many rumors about what Trevorrow’s version would have entailed, but so far the director has rejected those claims as false, which he didn’t have to do. Maybe one day we will get a script and be able to satisfy our curiosity, but while The Rise of Skywalker is in theaters is not the right time.
