Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been weighed. It has been measured. And it has been found wanting. It’s been around fifteen years since George Lucas closed out the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and it was around then that fans thought the franchise could stoop no lower. Unfortunately, that doesn’t appear to be the cast — at least as far as critical ratings are concerned.
While we often look back at the Star Wars prequels with derision, the reality is that The Phantom Menace was the only one to receive a “Rotten” rating. With the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the franchise got another entry in the halls of shame with another Rotten release. But fans could still rest easy knowing that it wasn’t as poorly-received as The Phantom Menace.

No longer. The Rise of Skywalker has now dipped to 52%, which is just a hair below The Phantom Menace’s 53%.
Do I think the film is nearly as bad as Episode I? No, not really. But just as history will see The Last Jedi as the best Star Wars movie of all-time, history will eventually find a place for The Rise of Skywalker in the overall discussion.
