Update: In a separate post, Vanity Fair confirms that it is the Knights of Ren Kylo is taking down in the trailer.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Knights of Ren were introduced into the Star Wars canon by J.J. Abrams in Star War: The Force Awakens, and while it seemed they would become more important down the line, but they were all but absent in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. And it made sense. With Kylo Ren and Rey going through their emotional arcs, it was just a little too packed to add in a whole other element (say what you will about the film, but it wasn’t exactly light on story and plot).

For months, fans have been hoping to see these guys return in Episode IX, which we now know to be Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Even in the trailer for the film, we got to see what could be them, but it still wasn’t clear. But thanks to a new extensive Vanity Fair report, we have our confirmation in the form of a beautiful photo from the set of the movie, which shows director J.J. Abrams speaking to the group.

But what is their goal? What is their connection to Kylo Ren? What overall influence did they have on him, and will they be allies to him or an antagonistic force? Sadly, we don’t have the answers to those questions. Even Vanity Fair doesn’t have the answer to those questions. All we have is that nifty photo of the crew, which you can CHECK OUT HERE.

Personally, I’d like to see them as an antagonistic force. After Kylo Ren takes over as Supreme Leader of the First Order, you can imagine they’d want their own piece of the pie. But on what terms did Kylo part with the Knights of Ren? And will he be willing to concede power? Who knows?
