The connection between Rey and Kylo Ren/ Ben Solo was paramount to the story of The Last Jedi. In fact, it was the most rewarding aspect of that movie for me. I was always engaged with any scenes between the two as they connected to one another through the Force, able to converse with one another across the Galaxy.
With The Rise of Skywalker only three months away, co-writer of the movie Chris Terrio has spoken with Empire about carrying forward this connection into the sequel trilogy finale, check it out below. You can also catch an exclusive image from the movie by following the link above.
“Some of the most interesting scenes in The Last Jedi are the conversations between Rey and Ren,” he said, noting the different side of Ben Solo that Rey is able to tap into. “We’ve tried to pick up that complicated relationship that really has been present ever since the interrogation in Episode VII. When Ren takes off his mask, there’s a nakedness about him with Rey that he doesn’t express to anyone else. Rian developed that in fascinating ways and we’ve been able to develop it even further.”
I’m glad that this connection between the hero and the villain is being further explored in The Rise of Skywalker. It remains to be seen how this conflict between the two will resolve itself in the finale. However, I’d expect there to be plenty of opportunities to further explore these two central characters in this third movie.

Terrio co-wrote the movie alongside director J.J. Abrams who of course returns as director after helming 2015’s The Force Awakens. I guess we’ll find out how the Skywalker Saga ends (again) when The Rise of Skywalker opens this December.
