For months, fans have been wondering whether or not Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker would be able to course-correct the massive box office decrease The Last Jedi had compared to The Force Awakens. Of course, as a second film stacking up against one of the most successful films of all-time, it’s a tall order, but I think most believed it would make more than the $1.3 billion it had made.

In weeks past, The Rise of Skywalker was on course to take in around $200 million, which is less than the $220 million The Last Jedi made in its opening weekend. So, with preview night under our belts, how is Star Wars actually doing?

According to Deadline, the film has taken in $40 million in Thursday previews is looking to take in $90 million in North America on Friday. This puts it at about $190 million to $195 million for the weekend as a whole. Again, it’s lower than the previous two entries by a margin, but I’m interested to see how it does in weeks following.

As I reported earlier today, The Rise of Skywalker may have received mixed reviews from critics, but it seems to be accepted as a fun movie by a lot of fans, with its Audience Rating sitting at around 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. But does this actually reflect the population as a whole? We’ll see what its CinemaScore is later on, but only time will tell how it continues to do in weeks going forward.
