STAR WARS: We Haven’t Heard The Last Of Forest Whitaker As Saw Gerrera

It’s funny. While my initial response to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a loving one, there was one aspect of the film that received the immediate scorn of myself and the fellas I caught the movie with. We all unanimously agreed that Forest Whitaker was distractingly bad in the movie, in the role of Saw Gerrera. While everyone else gave grounded, gritty, gripping performances, it felt like Whitaker didn’t get the memo and was busy delivering his lines with way too much operatic, Shakespearean theatricality.

Whitaker seemed, to me, like he was in a different movie than the rest of the ensemble.

Still, it was cool to have Gerrera in the film. The character first appeared in the fifth season of the animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and it was neat to see a live-action film embrace some of what’s been created for that show as well as Star Wars Rebels. It was recently announced that Gerrera would be making his debut on Rebels soon, and this is where Whitaker comes back into play.

Whitaker will reprise the role of Saw Gerrera on Star Wars Rebels and the character will make his first appearance on the series in the two-part episode, “Ghosts of Geonosis.” In the clip below, you can see some of what went into the fleshing-out of Gerrera’s character for his arrival on Rebels, and you can even hear Whitaker lending his voice to the man showrunner Dave Filoni calls “The Original Rebel.

You excited to see/hear Whitaker back as Saw Gerrera in Star Wars Rebels? What did you think of him in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story?
