Star Wars Will Indeed Take A Break After Episode IX, Skywalker Saga Ending

So here comes a bit of news that I’m sure all of you were expecting, and that had been mentioned in previous months in the past. However, given the advent of Star Wars Celebration and the solidifying of the path in the Star Wars universe going forward, it’s nice to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth — the horse being Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger, who had a chance to speak with Bloomberg Television on Thursday.

“We have not announced any specific plans for movies thereafter,” he told the outlet. “There are movies in development, but we have not announced them.” While he didn’t specify, the movies in question that we know about are the trilogy rumored to begin filming later this year from Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, as well as the trilogy from Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson. But, in regards to that rumor of the Game of Thrones guys shooting the film this year, I remain unconvinced, mainly by the confirmation that there will be a hiatus after Star Wars: Episode IX.

“We will take a pause, some time, and reset,” he said, “because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Stars Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus.”

My guess is that it will be about two years per film. Disney tried the whole movie-a-year thing, and when they tried to ramp up the releases to every five to six months, we got Solo: A Star Wars Story. With that in mind, I imagine Weiss and Benioff will begin developing the story in earnest later this year, with an eye on shooting it in 2020. But that’s pure speculation. We’ll see what news Celebration will bring us.
