So far Christopher Nolan’s new movie Tenet looks crazy good fun. But is it crazy enough for us to believe Tenet is a secret sequel to Inception, one of Nolan’s previous movies? To be honest the thought never crossed my mind. But this secret sequel theory is one the fan base had become obsessed by.
Is it the contemporary setting? Is it the time reversal thing? I’m genuinely stumped by where this theory comes from? I’ve looked into it, I just don’t see the dots myself. However Tenet star John David Washington recently spoke about Tenet with Esquire. In the interview Washington was asked about some crazy theories. Here’s what he said about the idea Tenet is a secret sequel to Inception, and it has got me thinking.
“I’d say Tenet is an in-law to Inception,” Washington said. “They’re related by marriage. They get together for Thanksgivings, family barbecues, like that kind of thing. Other than that, one lives in Europe, the other one lives in Compton.”
Now this quote could be read a couple different ways. For example, if I was to describe to someone back in 2011 the relationship between Iron Man and Thor, I might use similar terminology. Thor is not a sequel to Iron Man but they are kinda related. Remember this was before the idea of a shared universe was commonplace. So is Tenet secretly related to Inception? Could they take place in the same fictional Nolan-verse?
I would have initially guessed the answer to those questions was no. However, Washington’s comments have given me food for thought. Is it actually possible that Nolan has crafted two separate stories set within the same fictional world? I genuinely don’t know? Washington could also just be saying that thematically and aesthetically there are many similarities between Tenet and Inception? It’s an intriguing answer though isn’t it?
What do you think of the theory that Tenet is a secret sequel to Inception? Leave your thoughts below as always.
