Steve Zahn and Sasha Knight bonded on set for their wilderness expedition in the drama Cowboys.

The film follows a father and son fleeing towards the Canadian border after the mother refuses to accept their child as a son.

The film also stars Jillian Bell, Ann Dowd, Gary Farmer, Bob Stephenson, Chris Coy, and John Reynolds. Anna Kerrigan wrote and directed the film.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Steve Zahn stars as Troy, a troubled but well-intentioned father who has recently separated from his wife Sally (Bell). Aghast at Sally’s refusal to let their trans son Joe (Knight) live as his authentic self, Troy runs off with Joe into the Montana wilderness. Meanwhile, the police detective (Dowd) pursues them, but her resolve about the case is tested the more she learns about Joe’s family. Cowboys, a modern-day Western from director Anna Kerrigan, is a tale of rescue, family betrayal, and a father and son on the run.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta talked with Steve Zahn and Sash Knight about the transexual themes, the wilderness adventure, and outdoor activities.

Steve Zahn started in stage plays with Biloxi Blues, Bye Bye Birdie, and Sophistry. After Sophistry, he was discovered by Ben Stiller and cast in Reality Bites. Then he was cast into a variety of film and television projects that showcased his versatile acting range. Some of the films included That Thing You Do!, SubUrbia, You’ve Got Mail, Happy, Texas, Stuart Little, Sahara, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. In television, he appeared in Modern Family, Mind Games, Treme, and The Crossing.

Sasha Knight makes his acting debut in Cowboys, in which Outfest Film Festival recognized him for best performance. He is a series regular for animated series for Dreamworks and Disney.

Cowboys is in virtual cinemas and VOD today.
