Steven Knight is no longer writing the New Jedi Order era Rey Sequel Star Wars movie. The news brings into question when this movie will ever go into production? The report from Variety, and other outlets is another roadblock to the film actually getting made.
Here is what the trade reported.
‘There is another disturbance in the Force. Screenwriter Steven Knight has departed the “Star Wars” movie set to follow Daisy Ridley’s Rey after the events of 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”’
Knight was brought on board after previous writers, including Damon Lindelof who came up with the basic plot. At one point the plan was that this film should be in production by now. However, the problem was, Knight hadn’t at any point we are aware of delivered a script. Lucasfilm knows they need a good script before they even begin this one. They absolutely can not afford to kick off this era with an average/poor movie. Not when Daisy Ridley’s Rey was last on screen in the awful Rise of Skywalker.

Which also makes this interview, published today with Daisy Ridley kinda awkward. Ridley was on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and had this to say about the upcoming movie. Note this was most definitely recorded before the news broke on Knight’s departure.
“We’re waiting for imminent news I would say. I might have already seen something. There might be a date of when we’re, yeah, the next stages.”
Not the imminent news I guess Ridley hoped for?
So far there is no word on who could be brought in to get this script approved. As for when we might actually see this film released? I’m guessing not December 2026, outside that who knows?
