It ain’t always easy being a fantasy nerd. The number of series out there is ridiculous, and it feels like the majority of them are unfinished. And given the unpredictable nature of storytelling, many fans are left waiting for years and years without any updates on the status of the next big volume. I won’t point any fingers, but George R.R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss tend to be commonly-quoted offenders.

One man who has never fallen under that umbrella is Brandon Sanderson, the author of the Stormlight Archive series (he also finished Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series after the author passed) and all-around wordsmith. The man tends to put out a couple of books a year, and he’s always very transparent on the progress of his work.

With that in mind, the author took to Twitter to share his progress on the latest Stormlight book, saying his rough draft has reached the 67% mark.

Two-thirds of the way ain’t too bad at all. But, of course, that requires some putting into perspective. These novels tend to hover around the 400k word mark, meaning he’s roughly 270k words in or so. So, if the novel was shooting for around 1,200 print pages, it’d be around 810 pages in or so.

In short, he has the length of a whole novel to go. But, hey! Progress is progress, and while only time will tell whether it will make that 2020 release window, it’s a good bet it’d land soon after.
