A Stranger Things animated spin-off series has been ordered at Netflix. That’s the news coming from Variety in their latest report, though other details are slim. There’s no doubt that Stranger Things is one of Netflix crown jewels. With the show coming to its 5th and final season soon, it seemed certain Netflix would look for ways to keep the franchise going.
Here is all there is in the source article.
Nearly all details about the show are being kept under wraps, aside from the fact that it was developed by Eric Robles and Flying Bark Productions. Robles has previously created the animated shows “Random! Cartoons,” “Fanboy & Chum Chum,” and “Glitch Techs.”
“Stranger Things” creators the Duffer brothers executive produce via Upside Down Pictures along with Robles of Flying Bark as well as Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps. Upside Down Pictures and 21 Laps are currently under overall deals at Netflix.

Now, perhaps once we have seen the final season, there will be opportunities where the story could expand into an animated show? However, right now there seems to be no clear opportunity story wise to do so. Ergo, right now I don’t see this as a great idea. If it was that good a spin-off idea, why is not live-action? My guess is that animated costs less and therefore there’s less risk attached to taking a lunge on it.
That being said, I’m not sure how interested I am in an animated series? I will always choose live-action over animated where possible. Given that Stranger Things has not been in the animated space previously, it just excites me far less than a live-action spin-off would.
