Stranger Things Creators On Spin-Off Ideas

Stranger Things Creators On Spin-Off Ideas

SFX Magazine recently caught up with the Stranger Things creators on spin-off ideas. We all know that Stranger Things 4, parts 1 and 2 will be released this year. We also know Stranger Things 5 is currently planned to be the finale of the show overall. However given the huge success of Stranger Things, could there be spin-offs? According to the Duffer brothers there certainly could be#, and they have some ideas already. Via ComicBook.

“We have some ideas,” Matt Duffer told SFX Magazine in a recent interview. “In terms of if we were to do any sort of a spin-off, or any continuation of Stranger Things, for us the bar was always, ‘Is the idea exciting enough that we feel the pull of wanting to do it again?’ I want to feel the pull of, ‘God, I really want to do this. I feel really, really excited about this.’ So that’s why we’re being careful about what that is and whether we move forward with it or not.”

“The key for us is that it needs to feel like its own distinct thing, not that we’re just retreading what we’ve already done, because what would be the point of that?” he said. “I do think we have something that could be pretty exciting. So we’ll see.”

The Duffer Brothers also mentioned that they wouldn’t want to lead an entire spin-off in the way that they’ve led Stranger Things, likely handing the keys to a new showrunner, but they would want to be “heavily involved” in the development process.

Listening to Breaking Geek recently, I know Jonesy and Jammer spoke about how they want to see the Duffer brothers do something else after ST has ended. I have to say I agree. As much as I love Stranger Things, I’m just not convinced spin-off shows are a great idea. Perhaps with the Duffers only producing any spin-off show it will still allow them to move into new territory? Still, I worry that any kind of spin-off would just be some kind of watered down version of the main show.

How do you tell a story set in that Universe without it feeling very similar. I did have one idea whilst writing this of a show I’d be interested in seeing. Same Universe but tonally very different. What about a prequel show which details how Humanity first discovered the Upside Down? I’m thinking somewhere along the lines of a more horrific Stargate SG-1. A team have to go in to do (MacGuffin plot) and make it back out again. That show could easily end with the humans sealing the rift forever, until those idiots open it again in the main show.

However I am sure the Duffers have a few ideas much better they are chewing over. What do you think of the Stranger Things creators talking spin-off ideas? Would you be interested in a Stranger Things spin-off in years to come? Let us know in the usual spot.
