By now you may have heard of a relatively new Netflix series called STRANGER THINGS, and if you haven’t, what on Earth have you been doing with your life? The show is a brain child of siblings Matt and Ross Duffer that serves as one giant homage to 80s entertainment. The series, which stars Winona Ryder, launched on the streaming service with little fanfare on July 15, but quickly grew in viewership as positive word of mouth spread from fans.

Not only was STRANGER THINGS a great love letter to Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, and old-school geek culture, but it was a gripping story as well. To top it off, the direction was distinct and solid, the acting (especially from the surprising child talent) was on point, and the overall execution was as good, if not better, than we’ve come to expect from a Netflix show.

So how well has the series been doing for Netflix? That’s the million dollar question. Netflix is infamously secretive about the performance of their shows. That hasn’t stopped some folks from trying, namely SymphonyAM, a startup which tracks Netflix ratings. According to them, STRANGER THINGS is doing pretty well for itself.

In fact, in its first 16 days, more than 8.2 million folks have watched the series, putting it ahead of most recent releases, including Marvel’s DAREDEVIL and JESSICA JONES, which are both well known success stories for the network.

You can check out the ratings below for yourself, though admittedly, it’s not clear to me if these numbers are for the first 16 days of STRANGER THINGS’ release or if they are the first 16 days of each series’ own release.

Although this chart from SymphonyAM may give us an idea of the ratings for certain Netflix series, what isn’t clear is how these ratings affect their subscription stats. At the end of the day, it means nothing for Netflix if the ratings are high for a series and their subscription numbers are dropping. Either way, you can add STRANGER THINGS to the growing list of incentives to stick with the subscription service.

If you need any other incentives to check out this show, it has an amazing soundtrack that brings back all the best (and worst) synth-y flavors from the films of decades past. I’d been unable to find the memorable score to the flick up till this point, but luckily for us, we only have to wait one more day in order to enjoy the first half of the soundtrack.

According to Netflix, Volume 1 of the soundtrack will be out digitally on August 12, with a CD release following on September 16. Volume 2 of the soundtrack will hit digital on August 19 (one short week after Volume 1), and CD on September 23.
