Suicide Squad 2: Could James Gunn’s Arrival Mean Jared Leto’s Departure?

We learned earlier this week that James Gunn has been tapped to write hardly anticipated Suicide Squad 2. What a lot of folks didn’t know, including myself was that Gunn and actor Jared Leto have a big of history, and not a good one.

Once again it seems to be tweets that are the culprit, and unlike his most recent troubles, Gunn’s tweets were directed at Leto. Back in 2015 Gunn had a periscope session (Twitter’s version of going live) that he himself called, “ambien-fueled” in which he more or less implied that Leto was into underage girls.  In 2012 Gunn tweeted, “Driving home from Vegas trading stories about what a dick Jared Leto is.”

There was also this tweet, which you can check out for yourself.

This doesn’t bode well for Leto appearing in Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel. Sure, movies and shows have been made with people who don’t care for each other, but with Gunn handling the writing, I think it’s likely Gunn will simply write the Joker out of the script or push for a new actor, especially if he also comes on to direct the film.

To be clear, this is all speculation and, apart from those tweets, there doesn’t appear to be any actual evidence surrounding any bad blood between the filmmaker and actor. For all we know, Leto could dismiss these tweets as poor jokes and move on, but we’ll have to wait and see. It’s also worth mentioning that even if Gunn hopping on means no Joker, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll get a new Joker, but could simply mean he’ll be written out — but again, it could also mean nothing.

Personally, I am all for a new Joker. Nothing against Leto personally, but his Joker never stuck with me, as his take looked like someone who would try to sell people meth outside of an Insane Clown Posse concert.
