After working hard to create an even more connected universe than Marvel, DC has started taking a completely different approach. Not only are they allowing themselves to exist completely outside of the DCEU with films like Joker, but even properties that exist within it aren’t subject to any real continuity. More than anything, Warner Bros. is working hard to make sure each of these properties stands on its own two legs.
Hence, it came as no real surprise that they’re considering James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad to be more of a reboot than a traditional sequel. This point seemed to be highlighted when it was revealed that Idris Elba would be taking over for Will Smith in the role of Deadshot. But what of some of the other supporting characters? It can really go either way, but no longer does it feel like the studio is willing to have their hands tied by any one person.

That being said, it looks like the film will be bringing back one familiar face in the form of Viola Davis, who played the cold and calculating Amanda Waller in the David Ayer-directed first movie, as TheWrap has reported. There are no details regarding the story or character other than she will be returning. While it’s not a huge surprise that Amanda Waller is coming back in the sequel, Davis’ coming back does at least give the films some semblance of continuity.
