I know you all have been waiting to say one final goodbye to the Winchester boys, but you’ll have to wait a little bit longer. Originally, the finale to Supernatural was set to air on The CW on May 18, 2020. Of course, in the wake of the coronavirus shutdowns, the long-running series has been one of countless that’s been affected. As of this writing, tonight’s episode — which is the 13th of the 20-episode final season — will be the last we’ll be getting from the network until further notice.
This news came courtesy of co-showrunner Andrew Dabb. Dabb took to Twitter on Monday to state, “Due to the shutdown, this will be our last episode for awhile. Stay well, stay safe, and we’ll see you on the other side.” This, admittedly made some fans nervous. Just how far along were they in the process? Were they so far behind that they were only up through episode 13?
“Clarification,” Dabb continued. “We have filmed through episode 18, however our visual effects and sound departments have closed because of the outbreak. So, right now, the episodes can’t be finished. However, have some special treats coming along the way– to help us all get through this.”
Of course, with this being the final season, one can’t help but wonder if the network is considering nixing the finale altogether. The fact that they have 18 episodes in the can already would push against that concern. But if that wasn’t enough, Dabb went on to say, “And yes, we, the CW, and Warner Bros fully intend to return and finish the series. It’s not a matter of ‘if,’ it’s a matter of ‘when.’”
As far as when we’ll be seeing the end of this long-running series…we’ll have to wait and see. The COVID-19 virus is an unpredictable beast, so we can’t exactly predict anything just yet. Regardless, rest easy knowing that we will get a conclusion of Supernatural.
