Tabletop Game Review – Strike

Strike by Ravensburger Games
Price: ~$20.00
Players:
2 to 5
Playtime:
15 minutes
Perfect for:
Groups seeking a super light, but highly engaging game of dice-rolling luck.

Strike is a game of exhilarating chance! Simple in nature but never ever dull, Strike compels 2 to 5 players to assemble and test their luck through the rolling of dice. To begin, each person collects a set of dice (the number of which depends on the number of players), and the oldest person goes first by tossing one into the arena—a foam lined bowl. The next person tosses a dice and if a match is made, then they collect the set. If not, the dice stays in. This style of play continues until all but one has no more dice to throw, and the last person rolling becomes the winner.

There are two important catches to Strike, however. First, if any player rolls (or knocks) a dice to make the “X” appear (there is no “1”) that die is removed from the game permanently. Second, if the removal of dice results in the arena becoming empty (either through set collection, “X’s” or both) the subsequent player must go “all in” and roll all of their dice and hope for some good results. These additional rules make the gameplay go quickly and champions are victorious in about 15 minutes or less.

What works in Strike is its simple to learn nature coupled with a highly engaging and addictive mechanic which results in fun, consistent replay value for players of all ages. Strike proves that basic concepts are still fantastic if executed properly and this couldn’t be easier to learn and play—roll some dice, hope for a match! There’s a reason certain games of chance have endured so long, and Strike capitalizes on the rush they provide.

Players who do not enjoy games entirely based on luck may not enjoy Strike as much as others. While people could possibly delude themselves there is even a modicum of skill involved, make no mistake: Strike is 100% a game of uncontrollable randomness. Players who are craving games with even a hint of strategy or complexity should probably look elsewhere.

Strike knows exactly what it is—a rudimentary dice-rolling game that puts a clever spin on the action through the base rules. It is a game that literally almost anyone could play and get some enjoyment out of with the right crowd, and the fast-paced action means you’ll hear cheers of “one more!” often when rounds conclude. Highly recommended for a quick way to pass the time, trips/vacations, and a last call for game nights.
