Who would’ve thought that Natalie Portman would actually be returning to the MCU? After the mess that was Thor: The Dark World, it seemed like the actress was pretty much done with the franchise, but after taking a brief sabbatical from Thor: Ragnarok, Portman will be returning in Thor: Love and Thunder, and will be playing the female version of Thor — who, of course, in the comics, was also Jane Foster.

But what other aspects will they be lifting from the comics? Speaking with Taika Waititi, Variety asked if the storyline would pull from the comic book, which has Jane battling breast cancer. Here’s what Waititi said.

“We’re not sure if we’re going to do a complete lift of that whole storyline. These things change through the shoot and even when we’re editing sometimes. Like, ‘Let’s get rid of that storyline where she’s got breast cancer. We’ll change it to something else, or maybe she’s fine.’”

“I think that’s a really powerful part of the books. I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there are two battles going on. Personally, I really love that storyline. But whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen.”

So, clearly, at this point, the actual story for the film is still a twinkle in Waititi’s eye. He’s batting around potential ideas, and while he may have an overall idea of what the film will be about, the details may quickly change. 

Plus, given how open he is to improv and on-the-spot changes, there’s just no knowing how it’ll all turn out, right?
