A Taiki Waititi Star Wars movie? Yay, yesterday saw the official announcement that Taki Waititi would co-write and direct a new Star Wars movie. However, when the rumors began around Waititi for Star Wars, the director, was pretty dismissive of the possibility. In fact, Waititi once claimed that they would fire him within a week if he got a Star Wars movie.
Were they just rumors when Waititi made that comment, or was he just lying to everyone? Turns out, in typical Waititi fashion, he has admitted he was just stringing us all along. Here is Waititi’s own response on Instagram to the official announcement of his new Star Wars movie.
I guess that’s just Waititi’s humor? When he denied knowing anything about the Star Wars rumors, I was sold, because he was so blunt. But the best fibbers, are also good storytellers, so I forgive Waititi his little humor at our expense. More importantly, Waititi is a director who always seems to excite and surprise me. Therefore I am very much looking forward to seeing what a Waititi Star Wars movie looks like.

Star Wars for me as a fan, consists of the original trilogy, Rogue One, and The Mandalorian, the rest haven’t worked for me whatsoever. Therefore, I am hopeful Waititi can be the spearhead for something that speaks to me as a fan again, but who knows? I guess we have quite a while yet to wait and see, probably? I don’t expect to see Waititi’s movie released anytime prior to 2024, given his current workload. As a Star Wars fan currently not happy though, this is the first announcement that has got me excited for quite a while.
