Tarantino May Make Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Longer

Tarantino isn’t exactly known for his brevity. His movies tend to skew between the two-and-a-half and three-hour range more often than not. Unlike many other filmmakers out there, he likes to give room in his actors’ performances and he likes to give time for his dialogue to sing, so to speak. But that’s not to say he gives no thought to a film’s length. His latest movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was two hours and 39 minutes long, and he was determined that the film make it to the Cannes Film Festival at an audience-friendly length.

“If anything, I wanted to go to Cannes too short,” Tarantino said at the Hotel Carlton the day after the movie’s screening at the festival. “If I’m going to err, I’m going to err on too tight.” But that’s not to say he’s completely married to the current cut of the movie. From the sound of it, he’s really ready to explore picking up some scenes from the cutting room floor.

“I may make it longer. I wouldn’t take anything else out. I’m going to explore possibly putting something back in.”

But what does Sony think about this?

“It’s his movie,” Sony boss Tom Rothman told IndieWire. “We’re privileged to be along for the ride,” he said. “It’s a Quentin Tarantino film. It’s entirely in his very capable hands.”

Sounds like Tarantino chose the right studio there.
